The first thing I was told by the terrified PR girl who was escorting me onto the set of “Right of Way” was to never look Bette Davis in the eye and not to speak to her until she spoke to me. Well, there I was watching her work, and looking her in the eye. Miss Davis shot her Bette Davis Eyes back in my direction and said, “Who is that?” Timid Miss PR Girl introduced me, and she replied, “Red shoes, I like a woman who wears red shoes!” (OK, so far so good).
Whenever my camera was on her, like the old Hollywood pro she was, she would instinctively shift slightly to find her best light. What a dream and I was in heaven! At one time during the shoot, I thought my film didn’t re-wind through my camera properly. Oh damn… something’s wrong, I thought. With little time left, I said, “Miss Davis, I think I have screwed up the last roll of film.” (Miss PR looked like she was about to barf…or did she?) “I like a woman who knows what she is doing. Let’s re-shoot!” I still have the thank you note she sent.
