NICK NOLTE San Fernando Valley 1987
Nick Nolte, who was playing a Texas Ranger in the “Extreme Prejudice,” is one of those actors who very much inhabits his roles—in this case, a buttoned up, distrustful lawman. When I arrived on the set, he invited me over to the craft table for a chat. “How do you intend to shoot me?” he asked suspiciously. Oh God, I thought… this is a test! I turned to him trying to get eyeball to eyeball, smiled and said, “I want to shoot you looking post-coital”
He looked stunned. “Huh? What?”
I said, “Resolute with a hint of fatigue.”
He paused, laughed and finally said, “No director has ever asked me for that.”
I past the test, and we did the shoot.
