ROBERT MITCHUM Hollywood 1981

My fleeting moment with Robert Mitchum was between scenes on the set of “The Championship Season.” Bored, he come over and plopped down on a stool in front of the seamless paper that I had set up on the sound stage to serve as a makeshift studio. So, I started shooting. I didn’t know it at the time, but he loved telling stories about himself.

The one I remember best: During the filming of “Ryan’s Daughters,” on location at Slea Head on the coast of Ireland, he spoke of politely signing autographs for all the visitors that had trekked to the beach that day, and apparently there were many. On the way back to his trailer, he found all his autographs—abandoned and strewn along the path. The ‘bad boy’ in front of my camera no longer looked jaded… he looked desolate.
