PAUL BARTEL Venice Late 80s

I have little memory of the circumstances that brought us together. But, somehow, Paul Bartel, the eccentric writer/actor/director found his way to my Venice studio for a series of dramatic portraits. I loved the ridiculously funny Eating Raoul and Scenes from the Class Struggle in Beverly Hills, so it was no surprise to me when he offered an unusual concept for me to photograph: He would wear his Burberry trench coat and obscenely “flash” for the camera, but when he opened the coat, exposing himself, there was no naked body - only plaid! I think that was the shot he preferred.
