IRINA DVOROVENKA American Ballet Theatre 2002

Irina Dvorovenka in Without Words, a brilliant conceptual piece by Nacho Duato. I was asked to shoot images of his movement which were then shown on a giant screen projected behind the dancers. Duato did not want the images that I took to be about the choreography. He wanted them to have a dramatic impact of their own, to be powerful enough to sustain what was happening on stage, like a visual residue of what we had just witnessed. Duato was fun to work with as he both showed me what he wanted and then allowed me to find the art in it. I shot PolaPan—my favorite film stock.
