SLEEPING BEAUTY American Ballet Theatre 2007
Backstage during the rehearsal of Sleeping Beauty. The world of ballet is perhaps dreamier than any other creative environment I know: it is a solitary world of hard work and a constant need to become ever more perfect. It starts in the heart of a little girl and simply grows. Beauty, perfection, pink tutus, shiny satin toe shoes, painted sets, prince and princess living in a fairy tale world. During dress rehearsals, many in the company stand in the wings and watch. This young corps de ballet girl, who with her toe shoes tied around her neck is watching the principal dancer rehearsing the famous Act One Aurora solo, reflects this childlike dream that one day the role will be hers.
