MAX CLELAND Atlanta 1992

I first met Senator Max Cleland when he ran the Veteran’s Administration in 1978. He went to Vietnam a strapping college athlete and came back a triple amputee, but that did not change his Georgia manners.  He insisted on opening doors for me wherever we went. Self-pity was not an option. This photograph was taken in his Senate office. He told me it was the first portrait that showed his disabilities. What disabilities, I wondered.
