RONALD REAGAN Los Angeles 1980

Former Governor, Ronald Reagan, was making a second attempt to capture the Republican nomination for the Presidency of the United States (having lost to President Ford in 1976). He was holding a star studded rally (Frank Sinatra, Tony Martin, et al) at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, and I had a People Magazine assignment to photograph him. This shot was taken in what could be labeled a ‘cattle call’ with the press corps and 6000 adoring fans pushing and shoving to touch the great man—not my usual habitat, but I was happy to have the opportunity to observe the candidate and his wife who was beside him. Nancy Reagan proved at that early time in Reagan’s presidential journey that she was always ‘watching his back.’ It was evident to me in 1980, that the soon-to-be President was hard of hearing. Mrs. Reagan, who was by his side, would field each question from reporters as if she had not heard it and repeated it aloud giving time for Reagan to both hear well and compose his response. She was brilliant.
