ART BUCHWALD Martha's Vineyard c.1999

“All the boys at the Hebrew Orphanage were given polo ponies when we were five.” Right! True to the mischievous spirit of the deliciously ironic humorist—the only food critic in France to give his highest award for French Cooking to a Belgian restaurant, and run with the Bulls of Pamplona (probably escaping the irate French who read his column in the Paris Herald Tribune)—Artie found a way to both mock himself and make himself more heroic in the process. To do this photograph, Artie borrowed polo gear and a pony from a friend, declaring “this is how I want to be remembered.”
