WALTER CRONKITE Martha’s Vineyard 1998

Walter Cronkite loved being “the most trusted man in America,” and he carried his retirement from anchoring the esteemed CBS News with a quiet, distinguished sense of Commander Still-on-Duty. Even his assistant was Chief of Staff. One of the charming and predictable moments each year on the Vineyard was during Art Buchwald’s Possible Dreams Auction, when Walter and Mike Wallace would compete for the highest bid for their auction items. Walter could not bear to lose to Mike, and Mike could not bear to let the Walter lose either… so it was basically a done-deal: Sailing with Walter always brought a little more than lunch with Mike.
